Updates!

- As you all know, this year was the last Ninjafest. 2008 will bring a new festival, held on the same weekend at the same venue with the same format but under a different name. Running Riot Fest will be held on the 25th and 26th October at the Underworld and promises to follow where Ninjafest left off. A myspace page has been set up and band submissions are currently being taken. Please add the page for future developments.

- London Calling is looking for new writers... we would like more people to update the news (UK based), as well as column writers (anywhere). If you would like to write about anything or simply do a scene report, please drop me a mail to: London.calling.hc@gmail.com. The banner on the messageboard is also currently up for grabs so if you would like to advertise there, please email.

Finally, I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a fantastic new year, and I hope that 2008 brings you all that you hope and wish for.

50 Caliber news

Londons very own 50 Caliber have had a complete overhaul and have somewhat returned to their original line up. The band have parted ways with both their singer of around 4 years, Andy Baz, and guitarist Andy, and have recruited original vocalist, Terry Simmonds and original guitarist Terry Haynes to take their place. Charlie from BunDemOut has also been brought in to take on second guitar duties, with Steve BDF remaining on bass and Billy on drums.

The band are said to be writing new material for a follow up to their 2003 split with Die My Demon to be released on Filled With Hate/Goodlife Records.

Dead And Powered Fest

On Saturday, 8th Dec, Dead and Gone Records will be joining forces with Belgian Label, Powered Records to put on a festival in Bradford at the 1 in 12 Club. There have been rumours that this show has been moved to Leeds, but these have been dispelled and the show is still happening in its original location.

The line up is a mixture of UK and euro bands and includes such treats as Black Friday 29 and Rhythm To The Madness as well as awesome home grown talent like Deal with it and Dirty Money. This is also the release show for both the Down and Outs LP, "Friday nights, Monday Mornings" and Black Friday `29s LP, "In The Pursuit of Happiness" so pick them both up.

The show is £8, doors are at 2.30pm and the day promises to be a cracker.

Ninjafest Thank Yous, Plus next year..

It came and it went. The final Ninjafest ever. But, before you begin to mourn the festival, there IS some good news. There will be a festival on the same weekend, in the same venue, but under a different name next year. The fest has a name but until the dates are confirmed, this will not be released. And before that, there will be many other uk fests (Dead and Powered fest which will be featured here next week, Facedown Fest which will hopefully be announced soon, to name a couple), so there is no time to be sad.

But back to Ninjafest. Many people bought the fest together this year and without them, it would not have been possible.
- First and foremostly, the two other festival organisers, Rach and Louise. You are both going to be terribly missed and thank you for an awesome 6 years.
- The bands that played from the local boys to the boys that travelled hours on end to get there in time. You all played awesome sets and made everything worthwhile.
- The Underworld Staff for letting us do this for 6 years, and letting me continue to do this for however long before it kills me.
- Sploot and the sound people at the underworld for being the best.
- Jen, Naomi and Lynne for feeding everyone and transporting stuff..
- Kieran and James for the merch tables and getting them there.
- All that lent equipment for the backline. You know who you are and im sure you dont want your names posted up on here haha.
- Kevin and Charlotte for doing so much for me in the mornings when we first got there and the boring job of wristbands. I love you both loads.

And last but not least, all that came, all that sang along, stage dived, made the atmosphere incredible, moved out of our way when we were stressing out and said kind words at the end of the weekend. Thank you.

Lets make the next fest even better.

Worst week for hardcore in 2007

RIP PALEHORSE
Today, it was announced that CTs Palehorse are to split. Together since 2003, the split was said to be amicable and the band remain friends. They will be sorely missed.

- To all that were planning to travel to Germany for Maximum Destruction Festival.. the fest has been cancelled. Word on the street is that a smaller show will be held for all the touring bands, but no information has been released yet, so keep checking the board for more information as I am sure it will be posted up there.

The statement that was released by Rico implies that this will be the end of 17 Stitches, which has put on some of the most awesome shows in west germany, so please add their myspace and show your support.

After some nights without sleep, the 17 Stitches Team made the decision to cancel the Fest. At this point we have to say that our expectations on the Pre Sale not came true and we cannot guarantee the Fees which were promised to the Bands anymore. As well we are worried about all the production costs and all the people who are involved. We can’t take this big risk anymore. We know there are a lot people out there who are sad about that decision but there’s no other solution. Those of you who already bought tickets can refund their money back. We want to thank so many who supported us through all those amazing shows! We know who you are and we love you for what you did. As for now it looks like that this is the end of 17 Stitches as well. – Rico & the Team

This is what we do..

No matter what your thoughts are on hardcore kids, When someone is down, hardcore kids will rally around them to pick them up.

A friend of many London hardcore kids, from the USA, is sick. As it is unknown whether he wants his business aired on the internet, he shall remain nameless for the moment. As many of you probably know, americans are not as blessed as we are with free healthcare, so our friend is unable to go and get treated as he simply cannot afford it.

A show will be held on the 5th September at The Purple Turtle to raise funds to go towards him getting treated. The lovely people at Vendetta Inc will also be there, donating all their profits to the cause.

A line up for this show will be announced within the next couple of days so please keep checking back for details.

This person means the world to a lot of people, so please come and show your support.

Realfest 07.. Ninjafest News...

Summer is coming to an end, well, the little that we saw of it here in london (I counted 4 days?), and what better way than to end the summer with an all dayer featuring some of the UKs finest hardcore bands in the heart of Brixton. If you dont know what I am talking about, then read on.

The boys at Rucktion are putting on another all dayer at the Jamm Bar in brixton on bank holiday monday featuring Ninebar, Taking Names and loads of other awesome bands. The all dayer is also the release show for the long awaited Kartel Album, "Rise of The Guttersnipe".

The show is the day after all the big weekend festivals (Ieper, Reading, Leeds), so you have no excuse. What better way to get over the post festival blues then attending this show?

On a completely different note, Ninjafest tickets are now onsale and the running order is up on the website. Please note that this festival WILL sell out, as it has done over the past 5 years. This year is also the last "Ninjafest" being held (another fest will be held the same weekend but under a different name), so get your tickets and make it one to remember.

We will be unable to help you out if you do not buy tickets in advance.

UKHC Demo Database

A UKHC Demo Database has been added to the site links.

I know it would have probably been better to make it live when I had more bands up, but I thought that it would be good to show bands what i was doing with the band pages so they could chose whether or not they wanted to be on it.

This was set up partly for selfish reasons. It became a real pain in the arse to troll myspace looking for new and old UKHC bands that had demos and not label releases for the podcast. I also thought it would be an awesome resource for everyone to have once fully built up.

So, if you are in a band, and would like your demo included on this database, please drop me an email to: london.calling.hc@gmail.com and i will tell you what i need from you.

Thanks for your time!

Deal With It looking for dates. Help them out.

From Dead And Gone Records:

We're currently booking a UK & mainland tour for deal with it.

We have a handfull of UK shows to fill 25-27 June
One the mainland we have 1st & 2nd july free - we're looking for shows in Germany

Deal With It

Leeds, England

In an age where straight edge is all but done with, when it's more important to be vapid and ironic than to have an opinion on something, when a person is judged by their choice of trainer instead of what they're ready to commit, Deal With It arrived on the scene to bring back some integrity. Outspoken and energetic, they combine the best elements of Breakdown, No Warning, Cro Mags and Leeway.

Musically hard as a bag of hammers, and lyrically world weary and full of rage, Deal With It are a hardcore band in the truest sense of the word, and are a force to be reckoned with. "My world is coming down"

D&G Releases : 'World Coming Down' 7"
'World Coming Down' CD out in June

Your Demise "caught by the fuzz"

Your Demise, who recently were crowned as the hardest working hardcore band in the UK, had a run in with the law in belgium this past weekend. Live on "May and Mates" on Totalrock, vocalist George described how they were stopped on a notorious stretch of road in Antwerp after being shopped in by a passing motorist. The band were charged with possession of a firearm with intent to use. The firearm in question was a BB gun purchased in Belgium. Apparently a dildo was also found in the vehicle.

The band were held for 23 hours, missing the first show of their mainland euro weekend jaunt. They were released to play the next show in Germany the next day, and will return to belgium to attend court to face the charges.

A statement from the band will be posted once available.

Friday 20 April 2007

Seventh Cross to Split. Details of their last shows.

We regretably announce that Worcester five piece, The Seventh Cross, have decided to call it a day and part ways. The band will be playing two, possibly three last shows in the UK, with the all dayer on May 20th being their last London show.

London Calling will miss this band terribly and wishes all of the boys the best of luck.

From the band themselves:

hey.

as any of you who've been paying attention to the band will know, jon quit the band a month or so ago. we were bummed as he's been with the band since day 1 and he's a great dude, but we were gonna try and replace him. but then Jim started thinking about the band i guess, and after reflecting on the situation, he has decided to follow suit. he feels the band's best is in the past and it's time to move on. bum out. myself, reynolds and JJ don't feel the same, but as we've just lost the last 2 original members we feel it would be a bit fraudulent to carry on. napalm death, we are not. we're all a bit gutted, but that's life.

so, we're going to play some last shows.

London, the Underworld, Sunday 20th May w/ loadsa bands
TBC Leeds, the Fenton, Friday 25th may w/ clone the fragile, deal with it and betray these angels
Hereford, the Herdsman, Saturday 26th may w/ others tbc

the london show is an all dayer with loads of awesome bands, check the flyer:

note we're not on the flyer as we're a late addition to the bill, and that stout have pulled out.

as you can see the leeds show is TBC. i have booked the venue, but jim is a little unsure it's worth doing a leeds show because he thinks no one gives a shit. so, if you would like to see us do a leeds show, please comment to that jim can see it's worth doing. this isn't some dumb comment me pls i need attention0 thing, we're genuinely having trouble convincing jim it's worth it, and you can help us. i really want a last leeds show, it's my home town and leeds has always been good to the seventh cross, so yell on our myspace if you want us to do it. i'm not kidding. don't yell = no show.

so that's it, after these 2 (poss 3) final shows, the band is dead. we will be playing mainly songs from our full length scorched by the flames on vengeance so come down, have a dance and help us lay this beast to rest. we'll be selling off our remaining merch real cheap too. we could print some dumb last show shirt but this isn't about seperating you and your money, so we won't.

i think jon and jim are taking a break from bands for a while. JJ is looking for members to join with him in a black/death metal band nhor__@hotmail.com or get his myspace link in our members section. reynolds is already talking to a couple of well known UK metalcore bands about filling their vacant drum stools, so you'll all be seeing plenty of him and his cock soon enough. me and him are also planning on starting up a new group too, maybe with JJ if we can convince him to join. i have a new band too, HONOUR AMONG THIEVES which you should check out if you can be bothered.

we'd like to thank everyone for their support over the lifetime of the band, there are way too many people to mention but i'm sure they all know who they are. we've had a lot of good times and none of us will ever forget it.

keep it real, and keep it metal.

cheers

sheep & the seventh cross.

THANKS KIDS!!

LDN New Blood.

If you ask anyone that lives outside of London to define London hardcore, the answer would generally be "tough with breakdowns". This definition is blown out of the water by "Honour Among Thieves". With a more melodic sound than your average london band, Honour Among Thieves mix bane style vocals with tougher screams, and guitars that would feel quite at home in Comeback Kids debut record. The band already have a handful of shows, including support slots for Sick Of It All and Madball.

Next up is Jailbait. The band haven't even recorded a demo yet and have been hailed as one of the most promising bands to come out of London. The band earned this tag after their spectacular performance at Facedown Festival at the dome last month. While the band are not bringing anything relatively new to the table musically(but lets face it, how many bands do these days), they are, by far, the funnest hardcore band I have seen in a long time.

Please give both bands your time.

Help Out Deadfest.

Disclaimer: The beauty of hardcore is that when a hardcore kid is in trouble, generally, most hardcore kids will band together to help their fellow man out. When starting this blog, I promised myself that I would not use it for charity purposes, but as someone that has put on shows, I understand how much money has been lost and I also know how bad it feels to not be able to continue doing something you love because of money issues. I have also attended this fest two years in a row and would be gutted if its cancelled. This is why this news feature is here.

Deadfest is Swedens largest hardcore festival. Booked and promoted by Chris, also founder of Dead Vibrations, the fest is growing bigger every year and attracts people from all over the world, showcasing not only some of the best scandinavian hardcore bands, but also bands from all over the world. The weekend, held in Linkoping in Sweden, is one of the better fests in europe and always promises a good time.
Unfortunately, Deadfests future is currently in question due to financial issues. There is talk of the fest being moved to Finland, or being cancelled altogether. This would not only be heartbreaking, but it would also be a huge blow to swedish hardcore.

A paypal account has been set up for Deadfest, not by Chris himself, but by the guys from Rukus.se. If you would like to help the fest out, please paypal money to: helpdeadfest@gmail.com

Girl that posted kinky photos now trying to talk like she's in LA Law

Some broad from Caerphilly that insisted on showing everyone on London Calling photos of herself wearing not-very-much recently has stunned viewers with a dramatic u-turn.

Now she is demanding the removal of certain photographs, threatening lawsuits and using big words like 'violation' and 'permission'.

The broad implies that images of herself are worth enough money to go to court for. Regular poster Toffy however, disagrees, and has adjusted his original rating to penalise the broad for this change of attitude.

"I can post prickteaser photos of myself all I like, but the minute anyone tries to steal my thunder, I'll run to my photographer who'll squish you like a bug under the tyre of the Juggernaut that is commercial Copyright Law".

Nothing to do on St Patricks weekend?

We all love a reason to party. Now we have two. Not only is it St. Patricks day but the lovely folks at Last Exile are putting on Facedown Fest at the dome.

Comprised of 24 hardcore bands spanning over two days, this fest will showcase the talent that the UK holds, with most regions represented.

It promises to be an amazing weekend. So come out.

Wednesday 7 March 2007

Vendetta Inc up and running.

Possibly the best idea ever? I think so. Showbooker Niesh, Tattooist Dom Holmes and Special Move frontman Scott have all joined forces to create Vendetta Inc.

From booking shows, to designs, to vegan and veggie food stalls at shows, to shirts, the three have come up with a concept that will take the hardcore scene by storm.

Click on the banner above and use their services.

We wish them all very good luck and look forward to Vendetta inc taking off.
The first appearance of the food stall will be at Facedown Fest at the dome.

Uproar at London Calling Members

Members of the London Calling board started a full blown war with the members of the collective zine board, it was reported this morning. The main culprite, a london calling member, was seen screaming Bulldoze lyrics and then was snapped "throwing chairs". Luckily, we were able to find the evidence and post it here, and she will be punished in due course. Please comment on what you feel would be an appropriate punishment on the board.

Deal With It news

From the gentleman at Dead and Gone Records (see link below)-

"We're happy to announce the release of Deal With It's debut 7" 'World Coming Down'. You can get it from our webstore now and early birds will get the record on coloured vinyl. 5 tracks of the finest straight edge hardcore you will hear this year

Deal With It will be playing a record release show at The Fenton in Leeds on February 28th with Fast Point, Choke, Dirty Money and Run Like Hell. DWI aren't standing still and we will be recording for a split with Dirty Money very soon. The band are also travelling to the mainland to appear at this years Light The Fuse fest. Make sure you check them out.

Rest In Peace, Mikey.

Michael Lambert, photographer and head of the team at Join The Pit passed away a few days ago in his apartment in Luxembourg.

There will be an unmistakable void on the mainland now without Michaels smile and wonderful nature. We thank him for all his support for uk bands, and I personally feel honoured to have known such a kind and wonderful person.

Mikey, you will be missed and I hope you are happy where ever you are.

Photos done the right way..

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

There is one thing with "those kids" that stand at the front of shows, with their big cameras and their big flashes that really gets to me.. that noone else ever gets to see those pictures. They become pictures that are lost on the owners harddrive, never to be see by anyone but the owner themselves. This, to me, defeats the point of band photography in the first place.

Jan is one of the exceptions to this rule. From the moment he moved to London, he has been seen stood taking hundreds upon hundreds of photos at most shows and, much to our delight, posting the best from his collection on his website a couple of days later (the latest being from the Black My Heart shows). From band pictures to photos of his friends to kids dancing, Jan always manages to capture the energy and the atmosphere of the shows he attends.

His work, and sharing of his work, is very much appreciated, so please click on the banner above and check out his pictures.

"Tough guy hardcore should be banned"

Between March and May, there are around a couple of fests and all dayers in London to take note of, the first being Facedown 07, followed by Crucifest, followed by Damage Control (date/line up/venue TBA) and finally, the late may all dayer. Now you can't complain of nothing to do on your weekends. As well as this, there are a huge amount of other bands coming over including the Sick Of It All/ Wisdom in Chains tour as well as Merauder and First Blood. Have a look in the calender for tour dates.

Also, if you are willing to go on the mainland, Filled with Hate have just announced the line up for filled with hate fest line up, to be held in Essen, Germany, with a one off from NJ Bloodline..worth the trip purely for this.. Well, this and Dunkin Donuts.

Earth Crisis "reform" and plan european tour..

Thanks to Youth Of Today, every hardcore band that are no longer now have the chance to get back together and make some cash. There is an ever growing list of bands that have done this since 2003.. Underdog, Leeway, Killing Time and Gorilla Biscuits to name a few. Earth Crisis were the latest to be added to the list, with reports coming out of Baltimore, playing possibly their best ever set last Saturday on the east coast.
There was never any question as to whether they were going to be doing tours, as the Baltimore show was dubbed as the "only east coast appearance", and MAD, the bands European tourbookers, have released a statement saying that they will be playing Europe between June 22nd to July 3rd. The dates suggest they will be coming over for the european summer fest season, with the first dates announced being With Full Force festival in Germany and "Hellfest" in France.
For the skeptics out there, keep an eye on the show calender as there will surely be a London date.
Lets hope "earth crisis face" turns up and makes it worth our while.

Telling People To "Get On" New Band Has Opposite Effect Shocker

Research indicates that trying to hype up a new band by telling others to "get on this shit" or similar ultimately has the opposite effect.

Experts call this "Griff Rhys Jones Syndrome", recalling the Vauxhall car company's street-cred crushing decision to cast a scruffy Welsh guy in a tweed blazer to sell its cars.

Nobody wanted to know what car Griff Rhys Jones endorsed, just like nobody wants to know what bands you want other people to "get on".

Subconsiously we just add them to the growing list of bands to never bother with.

So now you know.

Killswitch Engage Reschedule London Date

(disclaimer: I am well aware that Killwitch Engage are not a hardcore band, but as Howard Jones knows more about hardcore than half of you goons, and a few of you were going to this show, I thought this would be newsworthy)

Killswitch Engage had to cancel their show at London Brixton Academy last Saturday due to guitarist Adam aggravating a previous back injury. Adam was in such a serious condition that he was admitted to hospital here in London and operated on. He will not be able to tour for the foreseeable future and will be replaced by ex-Soilwork guitarist Peter Wichers for the remaining european tourdates, with London, Bristol and Paris as the only cancelled dates. A press release was issued by the band stating the following:

“Adam will be missed, but he wants the tour to go on… we will try to miss as few shows as possible, and make up as many as we can. We appreciate all the messages and concern that everyone has shown.”

The london date has been rescheduled for 29th January, and original tickets will be valid.

Knuckledust guitarist catches Enormous Hand Syndrome

London hardcore band Knuckledust were struck by health problems this week when guitarist Wema was diagnosed with a case of Enormous Hand Syndrome.

Wema, seen on the left in a photo taken shortly after diagnosis of the rare condition, has been told to keep the swolen hand packed in frozen peas until further notice.

The band have said they hope the swelling to go down in time for upcoming gig and recording commitments.

Freddy Madball plays first "hip-hop" show in London

Madball frontman, Freddy, made his hip-hop debut at the Scala in London last night as support to Necro.

He was faced with many skeptical hardcore kids, with cries of "he should stick to what he knows", but proved them all wrong by not actually being that bad.

In other news relating to this show, a few london papers called for the gig to be shut down because of Necros lyrical content, and Anthony Martini, E-Town concrete's frontman, was spotted in the crowd, which prompted comments that he should take the stage himself and do an impromptu version of "Mandibles".

Purified In Blood UK dates cancelled

Without warning, Norwegian metallers, Purified in Blood, have announced they are to split. As a result, all UK dates planned in January are now cancelled. The band, who have been together for roughly four years, have given no reason for the split but left the following message on their myspace page:

Purified in Blood 2003-2007

We want to thank each and everyone of you who supported us and helped us along the way.

Lack Of News Will Not Obstruct News Reporting on London Calling

In a suprise move today, a new news item appeared on the London Calling newspage, despite there being no news to report.

The item, titled 'Lack Of News Will Not Obstruct News Reporting on London Calling' was posted by Tony, on Wednesday afternoon, after concerns that there had been no other newsworthy items that day.

To give the news item the finishing touch, Tony obtained a small gif cartoon image of somebody holding a newspaper, and added it to the news item.

In other news, the domains www.londoncalling.cjb.net and www.londoncalling.tk now bring you straight to the main page rather than the messageboard, so update your bookmarks, yo.

Early Stampin' Ground material "still awesome"

Its official, the early Stampin' Ground recordings featuring vocalist Heath are still awesome as fuck.

The Dawn Of Night and Starved 7"s, the MCD containing both, and the debut album Demons Run Amok are all still raging slabs of chug heavy mid 90's metallic hardcore.

Trivia nerds might be interested to know that Heath was actually SG's second frontman, and Adam their third. The o.g. Stampin' Ground demo tape featured Paul Catten of Medulla Nocte/Murder One fame on vocals.

But some 12 years later those first releases still hold their own against a constant slew of younger metallic hardcore bands.

Maybe now that SG have played their final show they can give the re-united Earth Crisis back the riffs they "borrowed". Heh.

The Break In disprove all nay-sayers

Canterbury's bad luck stricken The Break In have dispatched any rumours that they were past their prime by coming back twice as hard and ten times as heavy with a new line up at a gig last night in Folkstone.

With a shuffled line up featuring former bassist Crunch shifting to vocals and new drummer David John Mayes joining longer serving members Rich Shiner and Dan Frye, they blazed through a selection of material from last years Unbowed CD alongside some brand new tracks.

A witness, posting on the London Calling messageboard, said "I've never seen or heard them play aswell as they did tonight. people were going fucking mental".

Good to have you back boys.

Awoken to split. Final show details

"With regret and sadness, we are announcing our end. For us, Awoken has always been more than a band. It has dominated our lives for 4 years and it was, and still is a symbol of friendship, ambition, and perseverance. We achieved so much more than we ever set out to and it has been an honour representing UK hardcore across Europe. It's difficult to explain the reasons why we're calling it a day, but let's just say that we've hit a metaphorical brick wall. We've grasped every opportunity that has been thrown at us and now we're all out of new pathways. We could go on, losing money on tours and hacking away at the same cities, but we've always been adamant that Awoken should never, ever become stagnant in any way. It has never been a "weekend" thing so we'd never be happy just playing the odd show, or recording a few songs whenever we've saved enough money. In short, Awoken is all or nothing. We've been living our dreams, and sooner or later, reality was always bound to come crashing down. We always did things our way, mostly DIY, and we always stuck to our guns no matter what changes might have brought us more success. We hope that we will always be seen as a positive part of the London, UK, and European hardcore legacy and we cannot thank enough those who have helped us to achieve everything we did. You know who you are.

We will be playing our final show at The Bull & Gate, Kentish Town, London, on the 18th of February, and we would like to invite everyone - from old friends to new kids - to come and say farewell.

Over and out!
-Awoken"

So for the moment..

I spent months and months looking for someone to do a PHP based site for london calling.. somewhere where people could go to put in their shows, put in their reviews and a site that I wasn't going to have to run, but like the messageboard, runs itself.

Unfortunately, it seems that PHP coders are all very sought after and too busy to code a lovely little site so i thought i would do it this way.. use all the free internet resources I can.

Eventually, it will have a section for columns, a section for reviews, and somewhat a "london guide" that will include places in london you can get vegan/veggie food and record stores as well as directions to venues in london (like a poor poor mans Yo London haha)

If you would like to help out, with anything from writing columns to naming venues that should be included in the list, then please, drop us an email: london.calling.hc@gmail.com.. I already have a couple of people writing, but the more the merrier!

Also, if you would like to have your link put up on the site, then please drop me a line.

thanks for your time!
